Bing, here comes Microsofts new search (decision) engine...

By

Bing

With google leading the search engine race, live search, yahoo search adding to the compition, I dont think we were actually looking for a new search experience. But, the Desktop Software Major Microsoft seems to think other way around. As a next version of Liveserach, here comes Bing!!

So, why a new search engine? Why the new name? Why now?

Microsoft names Bing as a “decision engine” instead of a “search engine.” Microsoft’s reasoning: The Customers are ready to move “beyond just search” and Bing will help them make better decisions.

Still not convinced? Let us hear something from horses mouth. Here is what the Bing team at Microsoft wants to say:

"Well, because even though search is a pretty amazing thing, the current state of search engines has some equally amazing statistics.

At the same time, the way the world searches is changing. You want more than just information. You want knowledge that leads to action.

The truth is you've evolved. It's time search caught up.

So we had an idea. Start over. And we did.

We took a new approach to go beyond search to build what we call a decision engine."

This means that Microsoft is still not left the race of the search engines and this time it has come with a big bang and that is 'Bing'.

Technology wise, they are bringing in some of the concepts which google already adopts. Apart from that Microsoft is trying to make it's full efforts towards renaming its new search engine version as Bing. Mind you, it used to be earlier called as Windows Live search, then Live Search and now Bing. Probably someone at Microsoft felt that the lengthier names are not making any differences and let us name it Bing (Big Bang??!!).

The intial view of the reviewers has been quite good though. It is said to be much better than expected. Key features like Price Predictor which suggests the user the appropriate time to buy the flight tickets. Also the areas where Microsoft owns its own content company, Bing seems to provide very good result. However, when it comes to relevance of the results for the generic, Bing seems to be still lacking the elegance of Google search. This would probably mean that the race will still go on for long...

With Microsoft planning to spend somewhere between $80 million and $100 million with advertising agency JWT to try to spread the word about Bing, there definitely going to be a lot of news in the air for some more days. Then, only time can deside this war of search engines. Shall we say All the best Microsoft, or just HDIM !!?? (how does it matter;))

Do you think Microsoft will manage to lead the race?

I've noticed a lot of bing searches finding their way to my website in the past 2 months. Nowhere near as many as google, but certainly more than other long-standing search engines.
